Buying a Used Skid Steer or Track Loader

A blunt, hands-on walkthrough for judging hours, undercarriage, hydraulics, and whether the machine actually fits your job.

A used skid steer or compact track loader is one of the hardest-working machines you can buy, which is exactly why the used market is full of tired ones dressed up to look fresh. These machines get rented out, run into the ground on demolition and concrete work, and flipped before the expensive parts fail. The frame outlives everything, so a clean-looking loader can hide a worn undercarriage, a soft drive motor, or a chaincase full of metal. Your job is to separate a machine that was maintained from one that merely survived. That means reading the hours against the wear, knowing whether you actually need tires or tracks, and matching the loader's lift style and capacity to the work you'll do. Below is what to look at, in the order that saves you the most money.

Hours are a starting point, not the story

A skid steer's hour meter tells you how long the engine ran, not how hard it worked. A machine with 2,500 hours that graded topsoil for a landscaping crew can be in better shape than one with 900 hours that broke concrete and loaded rock all day. Ask what the machine actually did, then look for wear that either backs up the story or contradicts it.

Abuse leaves fingerprints. Concrete and demolition work coats everything in fine gray dust, wears cutting edges to nubs, and cracks weld seams around the loader arms and quick-attach. Loading dense material like rock, wet clay, and asphalt millings hammers the drive motors, chaincase, and hydraulics far harder than dirt work. Match what you see to what you're told.

  • Green flag: service records, or an hour reading that lines up with even, moderate wear on pins, edges, and pedals, plus clean recent fluids.
  • Red flag: low hours but heavily rounded control pedals, a glazed seat, and a worn-shiny quick-attach, which point to a swapped or unplugged meter or a hard, short life.
  • Ask the seller point-blank what industry the machine came out of, because rental-fleet and demolition machines age in dog years even at modest hours.
  • A machine's reputation follows the dealer, so before you drive across the state, check the dealer's reviews and weigh the verified-purchase ones written months after a sale about how warranty and service were handled.

Tires versus tracks: pick for the ground, not the look

The biggest fork is wheeled skid steer versus compact track loader (CTL). Tracks float on soft, wet, or sandy ground and grade smoother, but the undercarriage is expensive to maintain and gets chewed up on hard, abrasive surfaces. Wheeled machines are cheaper to run, faster, and shine on pavement, gravel, and inside barns, but they sink and tear up soft turf.

Buy for the ground you actually work on most days. A CTL that lived on concrete and asphalt will have a worn undercarriage that costs real money to redo, and a wheeled machine used in mud spent its life stuck and straining the drivetrain. The wrong tool wears out fast no matter how clean it looks.

  • On a wheeled machine, confirm all four tires match and wear evenly, because mismatched or unevenly worn tires strain the drive system and hint at a hard life.
  • Check sidewalls for chunks, plugs, and dry rot, and remember that solid or foam-filled tires never go flat but ride rough and can telegraph impact damage to the hubs.
  • Green flag: tire tread depth or undercarriage wear that matches the stated hours, with no single component far ahead of the rest.
  • Red flag: a CTL pitched as perfect for concrete and demo, since that is exactly the work that destroys rubber tracks and undercarriages.

The undercarriage is where CTL money hides

On a track loader the undercarriage (tracks, rollers, idlers, sprockets, and final drives) can cost more to replace than the machine's remaining used value. Sellers know this, so it's the area most likely to be cleaned up and glossed over. Inspect it cold, before the machine is warmed and driven, and don't be shy about getting down in the dirt to look.

Track tension, roller condition, and sprocket teeth tell you the truth. Sagging or overtight tracks, oil weeping from a roller, or hook-shaped sprocket teeth all point to real money coming due soon. Budget for it or walk.

  • Check the rubber tracks for cut lugs, exposed steel cords, cracked bar treads, and separation at the edges, because exposed cord means the track is finished.
  • Spin and feel each roller and idler for play, flat spots, and oil leaks, since a leaking roller seal means that roller is on its way out.
  • Sight the sprocket teeth from the side, where even, symmetric teeth are good and pointed, hooked, or worn-thin teeth mean the sprocket and probably the tracks need replacing together.
  • Red flag: fresh paint or heavy mud caked on the undercarriage right before a showing, which you should assume is hiding leaks or worn parts until you prove otherwise.

Lift arms, pins, and bushings: shake it and watch

The loader arms pivot on pins and bushings that wear into slop over time. A little play is normal on a high-hour machine, but a lot of play means loose, sloppy control and expensive rebuild work. Cracked welds around the pin bosses or the quick-attach plate are a serious structural warning.

Test it with the arms up and down. Watch every pivot point as the machine curls and lifts, because knocking, clunking, and visible movement at the joints all point to worn pins and bushings. Look hard at the base of the arms and around the coupler for cracks and amateur weld repairs.

  • With the arms raised and blocked or resting, push and pull the bucket or attachment to feel for knock in the pins, where noticeable movement means worn bushings.
  • Cycle the lift and tilt fully several times and watch the arms track straight, because a twist or lean to one side suggests a bent arm or badly worn bushings on one side.
  • Inspect every weld around the loader-arm bases, the bosses where the pins ride, and the quick-attach, treating cracks or grinder marks and re-welds as red flags on a machine that carries heavy loads.
  • Green flag: greased zerks, tight pivots, and factory welds with no cracks, a sign the owner maintained it instead of running it dry.

Hydraulics, drive motors, and the quick-attach

Hydraulics are the muscle of a skid steer, and they're where a tired machine gives itself away. Run it up to operating temperature, then load the system by lifting, curling, and driving at the same time. Everything should feel firm and hold, because drift, groan, or slowdown under load points to worn pumps, motors, or leaking cylinders.

Don't ignore the quick-attach and auxiliary hydraulics, since that's how you actually run attachments. Confirm the coupler locks solidly and that the auxiliary flow fits your plans. Standard-flow machines won't properly run high-flow attachments like cold planers, mulchers, and big snow blowers, so if you need those, buy a high-flow machine; paying for high-flow you'll never use is wasted money.

  • Watch the lift and tilt cylinders for weeping rod seals and pitted, scored rods, and note that a raised load that slowly sinks means the cylinder or a valve is leaking internally.
  • Drive it on a straight, level surface, where pulling to one side or unequal track or wheel speed points to a weak drive motor or a hydrostatic issue on that side.
  • Engage and disengage the quick-attach coupler, confirm both pins seat fully, and wiggle an attachment to check for a loose, worn coupler.
  • Match auxiliary flow to your attachments by knowing whether you need standard or high flow before you shop, and confirm the couplers under the arm aren't blown or badly leaking.
  • Red flag: milky or burnt-smelling hydraulic fluid, or a system that runs noticeably slow and hot after a few minutes of work, which signals expensive pump or motor wear.

Chaincase, final drives, and fluids

On wheeled skid steers, power goes from the drive motors to the wheels through a chaincase, a sealed housing of chains and sprockets running in oil. It's out of sight and easy to neglect, and a worn or oil-starved chaincase is a big-dollar repair. Pull the chaincase fill plug and check the oil, which should be present, reasonably clean, and free of heavy metal glitter.

Fluids in general are a cheap window into how a machine was treated. Fresh engine oil, clean coolant, and clear hydraulic fluid say someone cared, while sludge, the wrong fluid, or a chaincase run dry say the opposite. No amount of shine on the seller's story changes what's in the housing.

  • Check chaincase oil level and condition, because a low level or metal shavings on the plug magnet means chain and sprocket wear that is costly to fix.
  • Pull the engine dipstick and check the hydraulic level, looking for correct fill, clean color, and no milky water contamination or burnt smell.
  • Listen at idle and under load for grinding or whining from the drive side, since a failing chaincase or final drive usually speaks up before it lets go.
  • Green flag: a seller who can show recent fluid and filter changes and lets you check every fill plug without hovering.

Match the machine to the job before you fall in love

Two specs decide whether a skid steer earns its keep: rated operating capacity (ROC) and lift style. ROC is roughly how much the machine can safely lift; undersize it and you'll strain the machine and risk tipping, oversize it and you overpay and struggle to maneuver in tight spots. Figure out the heaviest load you'll lift regularly and buy with a sensible margin above it.

Lift style matters just as much. Radial-lift machines raise the load in an arc that reaches farthest at mid-height, which suits digging, grading, backfilling, and pushing at ground level. Vertical-lift machines keep the load closer to the frame and lift straight up with more reach and capacity at full height, which is what you want for loading trucks and stacking pallets. Buy the geometry that fits your daily work, not the one that sounds fancier.

  • Pick radial lift if most of your work is digging, grading, dozing, and ground-level tasks where you want strength and simplicity low to the ground.
  • Pick vertical lift if you routinely load high-sided trucks, stack material, or handle pallets, where reach and capacity at full height pay off.
  • Size ROC to your real loads with margin, meaning a full bucket of wet material or a heavy pallet-fork load, not the empty-bucket daydream.
  • Confirm the machine's size and weight suit your ground and your trailer, because a bigger machine you can't legally haul or fit through a gate is the wrong machine.

The short version

  • Read hours against actual wear and the machine's past work, since a swapped meter or a demo-abused low-hour machine is worse than honest high hours.
  • On a track loader, inspect the undercarriage cold and dirty, because tracks, rollers, and sprockets can cost more than the rest of the machine.
  • Raise the arms and shake the attachment to feel worn pins and bushings, and hunt for cracked or re-welded loader arms and quick-attach.
  • Warm it up and load the hydraulics, expecting firm lift, no drift, straight tracking, a solid coupler, and the right auxiliary flow for your attachments.
  • Check the chaincase oil and every fluid, because metal glitter or milky fluid signals expensive wear a clean paint job can't hide.
  • Match ROC and radial-versus-vertical lift to your real daily loads before price, and check the selling dealer's verified reviews first.
