Buying a Used ATV or Side-by-Side: What to Check Before You Ride It Home

A used quad or UTV can be a screaming deal or a mud-drowned money pit — here's how to tell the two apart before you hand over cash.

Used ATVs and side-by-sides sell fast and sell cheap because most buyers judge them by paint and tires. That's backwards. A machine that looks rough but got greased and stored dry can outlast a shiny one that spent every weekend buried to the floorboards in a mud hole. The hard-use damage that actually costs you — a cooked drive belt, torn CV boots packed with grit, a bent frame, a fried ECU — hides under plastic and behind the seat, and a seller who abused the unit is counting on you not looking there. Whether you're after a single-cylinder utility quad to check fences or a four-seat sport UTV for the trail, the inspection is the same discipline: read the hours honestly, put your hands on the driveline and boots, listen to how the belt and clutch behave, and confirm the paperwork matches the machine. Do that and you'll walk away from the disasters and talk the good ones down on price. Skip it and you'll pay used-machine money for a rebuild — a water-filled engine or a shredded clutch you never saw coming. This guide covers what to touch, what to ask, and what should make you leave.

Read the hours, not just the odometer

ATV and UTV wear is measured in engine hours, not miles. A machine can show 900 miles but 600 hours if it spent its life idling through plowing, winching, or field work — and hours are the number that tells you how tired it really is. Most EFI units show an hour meter in the digital gauge: cycle the key and scroll the display. On older carbureted machines there may be no meter at all, so judge by physical wear instead.

Use rough anchors: under 200 hours is lightly used, 200 to 500 hours is a normal working life with routine maintenance coming due, and past 1,000 hours you're buying into major service on the belt, clutches, and top end. Then sanity-check the number against the machine. Deeply worn grips, a polished seat, worn footpeg cleats, and a chewed-up shifter on a unit claiming 80 hours mean the meter is lying or was swapped.

Hunt for the tells of mud abuse and hard use

Mud is the single most destructive thing an ATV or UTV lives through, and its damage is cumulative and hidden. You're not looking for whether it saw mud once — you're looking for whether it was ridden hard and put away wet, over and over.

  • Pull the seat and floor drain plugs and look inside the frame rails and body for a dried silt line — caked mud high on the engine, behind the radiator, or inside the airbox means it was run in deep water and slop.
  • Pop the air filter and check the intake tract: fine grit or a water line past the filter means dirt and moisture reached the engine, which grinds rings and bearings.
  • Check the oil on the dipstick and fill cap. Milky, coffee-colored, or over-full oil means water got into the crankcase — walk unless you're prepared to split the engine.
  • Look at the radiator: mud-packed fins or a fan that runs constantly point to chronic overheating from a plugged core, and a radiator that's been relocated up onto the front rack or roll cage is a flat-out confession the machine lives in deep mud.
  • Check the CVT housing for water or a mud line — many machines have a clutch-cover drain plug or intake duct you can pull. Water in the belt housing makes the belt slip and cook, and it's a telltale of deep-water crossings.

Get under it: CV boots, bearings, and ball joints

This is where mud and miles show up as real repair bills, and it takes five minutes with the machine off the ground or the wheels turned to full lock. On a 4x4 quad or any UTV, the CV axles and their boots are the most abused parts on the machine.

  • Turn the wheels to full lock and inspect every CV boot — the accordion rubber cover on each axle end. Any split, tear, or slung grease means grit is already inside the joint, and a clicking sound on tight turns confirms the joint is on its way out. Boots are cheap; full axles are not.
  • Grab each front wheel and rock it top-to-bottom and side-to-side. Vertical play points to worn ball joints; horizontal play points to tie-rod ends or wheel bearings. On heavy UTVs, ball joints are a known wear item.
  • Spin each wheel by hand and listen for the dry rumble or growl of a failing bearing.
  • Check A-arm bushings and shock mounts for slop, and look for fresh welds or bent A-arms — signs of a hard landing or rollover.

The drive belt and clutches make or break a CVT machine

Nearly every modern side-by-side and most utility ATVs use a CVT with a rubber drive belt and two clutches (primary and secondary). The belt is a wear part, and how it's been treated tells you how the whole machine was ridden. A worn belt is a cheap fix on its own, but a belt that grenades can take the clutch faces and the housing with it — a far bigger bill.

Open the belt cover if the seller will allow it — on many UTVs it's a few bolts. Look at the belt edges and the clutch sheaves.

  • A belt that's cracked, frayed on the edges, glazed shiny, or noticeably narrower than a new one has been slipped hard — common on machines lugged in high range through mud or used to pull heavy loads from a dead stop.
  • Black rubber dust coating the inside of the clutch cover means the belt has been cooking and shedding.
  • Test-ride it: the machine should launch smoothly, with no shudder, belt slip, or burning-rubber smell. Belt chatter at low speed or a stumble pulling away is a worn clutch or belt.
  • Ask when the belt was last replaced and whether the clutches were ever serviced. A seller who can answer specifically has usually maintained the rest of it too.

Frame, skid plates, and structure

The frame is the one thing you can't easily fix. Skid plates take the hits so the frame doesn't, so read them like a logbook: deep gouges and dents in a skid plate are normal trail wear, but they tell you the machine met a lot of rocks and stumps.

  • Sight down the frame rails and check the steering stem, engine cradle, and suspension mounts for bends, kinks, or fresh welds — a repaired crack in these areas is a hard walk-away.
  • Confirm the machine tracks straight and the handlebars or steering wheel sit centered going straight; a cocked wheel points to a tweaked frame or bent steering from an impact.
  • Look for rust perforation on the frame and subframe, especially on machines from salted-road or coastal areas — surface rust is fine, but flaking, scaly rust that flexes is structural.
  • Inspect the rollover cage on a UTV for cracked welds, dents, or a repaint that might hide roll damage.

Electrical, EFI, and the modification trap

Modern EFI machines are reliable until water and corrosion get into the wiring, and heavily modified units carry risks a stock machine never will. Start it cold — a seller who has it warmed up before you arrive may be hiding a hard cold-start or a fussy EFI system. Watch the gauge cluster on startup for warning or check-engine lights, and confirm every accessory works: winch, lights, 4x4 engage and disengage, diff lock, and the electric power steering if equipped. Corroded connectors and green-crusted grounds are the legacy of deep-water crossings and cause intermittent gremlins that are miserable to chase.

Be skeptical of heavily modified units. A snorkel kit, big tires, a lift, a re-flashed ECU, and a portal-gear setup all scream a machine ridden as hard as its owner could push it — and big tires alone put extra strain on the belt, clutches, axles, and bearings you just inspected. Aftermarket wiring for lights and stereos is a common source of dead batteries and shorts. Mods aren't automatically bad, but price the machine as hard-used and budget for the driveline.

Verify the title, VIN, and that it's legally sellable

Powersports machines are easy to load and haul away, which makes them easy to steal, and a stolen or lien-encumbered unit can be seized from you later even if you bought it in good faith. Never skip the paperwork, no matter how good the deal feels.

  • Find the VIN stamped on the frame (often on the left front frame rail or the steering stem) and confirm it matches the title and any engine sticker exactly — a ground-off, restamped, or mismatched VIN means walk away and consider reporting it.
  • Confirm the seller's name matches the title and their ID, and that the title is clear with no lien listed. If there's a lienholder, the loan has to be paid and the title released before money changes hands — ideally done at the lender.
  • Run the VIN through your state's DMV and a theft check where available; some states title ATVs and UTVs and some don't, so know your local rule before you buy.
  • Get a signed bill of sale with the VIN, price, date, and both parties' names — you'll need it to register and it's your proof of a legitimate purchase.
  • Before you ever drive out to look, check the seller's or dealer's reputation through reviews — lean on verified proof-of-purchase reviews and ones written months later about how service and warranty claims were actually handled.

The short version

  • Judge condition by engine hours and physical wear, not miles or fresh paint — and cross-check that the two agree.
  • Mud abuse is the hidden killer: check the airbox, oil, frame cavities, radiator, and CVT housing for water and silt.

  • Confirm a clear title, matching VIN, and no lien before any money moves, and get a signed bill of sale.
